Thirty three years too late...

Given that Bowie is probably my favorite performer of all time, I find this reassuring...

david bowie
You're David Bowie...and every guy wants to be you, every girls wants to be in your pants. Or vice versa, or both! You are innovative, always weird, and aesthetically pleasing. Your lyrics are literate, and your music is unlike any other. You are always unique, no matter what situation you are in. Everyone tries to bite off your style, but no one can be you because you are funky fresh. Be careful to keep your mental health in check, because you have a tendency to flip out. But hey, being borderline crazy makes you even more alluring! You are skilled at manipulating everyone: the press, your fans, and even your closest friends. You are beautiful and strange, and you allow yourself to change and grow.

Because I have a soft spot for glam (among my other musical proclivities, both odd and mainstream), I thought this would be a good jumping off point for me to list a few of my favorite 1970's glam rock albums:
  1. David Bowie, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
  2. David Bowie, Hunky Dory
  3. Mott the Hoople, All the Young Dudes
  4. David Bowie, Aladdin Sane
  5. T. Rex, Electric Warrior
  6. Queen, A Night at the Opera
  7. Alice Cooper, Billion Dollar Babies (Alice was glam, albeit its darker side.)
  8. Sweet, Desolation Boulevard
  9. Elton John, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (Oh, yes, Elton was glam in his 1971-1976 heyday. Believe it.)
  10. Various Artists, Velvet Goldmine: Music from the Original Motion Picture (OK, I know this isn't 1970's glam, but it's the best recreation of 1970's glam I've ever heard.)
Hmmm. What should be next sometime? My top ten favorite metal albums? My top ten favorite punk albums? Folk? New wave? Or maybe even my top five favorite Sinatra albums?

Stay tuned...

In the meantime I'll probably write something to post either tomorrow or Monday addressing some of the comments from lurkers who were kind enough to delurk since my request a couple of days ago.

  1. Hey big bro...

    I'm David Bowie, too!

    Must run in the family.

  4. oOoh. As curious as I may well be about your tastes in the genres you mention, I have to BEG you to list your top ten folk albums. Though I am a-twitch with curiosity regarding your taste in punk (not to mention Sinatra), I am absolutely dying of my need to know more about your folk tastes.

  5. Out of curiousity (and assuming you saw it), what did you make of the Portuguese covers of Bowie tunes in "The Life Aquatic"?

  6. How about The Sweet? Kind of glam, not as spacy or talented as Bowie of course - but better than T Rex imo.

Also, you have to check out this site for some great pictures of the glam scene.

  7. Sean,

I never saw the movie and haven't heard the Portuguese versions.

    Completely missed the Sweet reference.

  9. So we have one more thing in common besides blogging about autism and vaccines! I started listening to Bowie back in 1972, and have never stopped. [gloat] I've got the Flying Pig bootlegs from the concerts he did that year at the Santa Monica Civic. [/gloat] When my oldest was a baby, I used to dance her to sleep to "Beauty and the Beast." Now, both of my adolescent offspring are huge Bowie fans. We went to see him, en famille, during the Area 2 tour, and last summer, got fabulous seats right behind the sound board when he played in Manchester NH.

When I went to a symposium on Asperger Syndrome a few years ago, at one point the speakers asked the audience for examples of their kids' "obsessions." Out came all the usual suspects -- trains, dinosaurs, insects, weather. Then I got to call out, "David Bowie!"

  10. Indeed. I only hope Bowie decides to put out an album and tour again now that he's had time to recover from his heart attack. Reality was the best thing he had done in a couple of decades at least.
